This was where the original Southern Cross took it’s maiden flight in 1934.

On Sunday 7th November, the Sunday Night Show on Channel 7 aired a piece on Sir Charles Kingsford Smith.

This was to commemorate the 75th anniversary of his disappearance and update the public on the Lady Southern Cross Search Expedition.

History Maker on Channel 7 Sunrise

Monday 8th November 2010 marked the 75th anniversary of the final flight of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and Tommy Pethybridge in the Lady Southern Cross.

The anniversary was commemorated with an unveiling of a static replica of the Lady Southern Cross in Anderson Park, which was the original location of the aircraft’s maiden voyage in Sydney.

History Maker was lucky enough to have the unveiling of the replica plane on Channel 7’s Sunrise morning show with Grant Denyer.

In each weather segment between 6am and 9am, Grant Denyer discussed the anniversary live from Anderson Park, interviewing family members of Kingsford Smith and Pethybridge along with Damien Lay about the discovery of the wreckage which will be confirmed soon.

Unveiling of the life size replica of the Lady Southern Cross

Damien Lay and History Maker cordially invites you to attend the unveiling of the life size replica of the Lady Southern Cross at Anderson Park (located at the corner of Clark and Kurraba Roads, Neutral Bay). This has specific historical relevance as the location where Sir Charles Kingsford Smith took off from on his first flight across Sydney in this aircraft.

The families of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and Tommy Pethybridge will be attending.

Date: November 8, 2010 – the 75th anniversay

Flight of the Cross documentary

Flight of the Cross is a feature documentary that follows the building of the replica aircraft History Maker Lady Southern Cross as it goes through the design & manufacturing process and undertakes the historic Commemorative Flight. The film – produced by Animax Films – will explore the brilliant and unique manufacturing processes pioneered by Lockheed in the 1930′s.

Understanding the performance and design of the original aircraft is critical in recognising and replicating its achievements. It also allows an accurate visualisation of the Altair and her subsequent unfinished journey. With the full support of Lockheed Martin, aviation experts oversee the manufacture process and make a detailed analysis of the aircraft. They implement the design of the original Altair with the special modifications added by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith.

As the film evolves, we also follow the recovery operation of the original aircraft Lady Southern Cross that was reportedly lost at sea in Myanmar (Burma). This recovery operation is being undertaken by Animax Films and offers the unique opportunity to examine and explore the wreckage of the original Altair and possibly answer the unsolved mystery of what went wrong.

Flight of the Cross marks for posterity the end of one of the most significant eras in aviation history, with the passing of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. Whilst presenting the important historical facts surrounding the aircraft Lady Southern Cross and its achievements, Flight of the Cross is a highly evocative and emotional journey.
