The Commemorative Flight

To commemorate the 75th year of the Final Flight of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and John Thompson Pethybridge, an historic flight in the History Maker replica of the Lady Southern Cross will take place from Myanmar (Burma) to Melbourne. This will be undertaken by the only son of the Aviation legend, Charles Arthur Kingsford Smith.

The Commemorative Flight will be an historic flight in its own right and present a very special moment for the public as well as the families of the two fallen Aviators. The Lady Southern Cross will fly once again, marking the completion of a long journey and the arrival of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith- the greatest Aviator of all time and much loved Aussie hero- back home after 75 long years.

The flight will also be an attempt by Charles Arthur Kingsford Smith to recapture the England to Australia speed record of the day for his father. The standing record was 72 hours, set by the British pilot Charles Scott in the 1934 Centenary Air Race. Following Smithy’s last recorded time over Mingalabah Aerodrome in Yangoon (Rangoon), the very airport where the Lady Southern Cross was last recorded to have landed on 7th November 1935, Charles will follow in his father’s footsteps in an attempt to not only complete the flight attempt but also break the record the old fashioned way!

The flight will depart from Myanmar in early November, and follow the original flight route set by Smithy and Tommy via Singapore, Derby, and then on to Melbourne. On this journey there will be a co-pilot and one important item – the Commemorative Flight Book!
